Because I am obviously the authority on such things, here is my list of the best tracks of 2015. Comments are welcome but please remember that my taste is obviously indisputable.
In no particular order…
The Weeknd – Can’t Feel My Face
Because I can’t just put this whole album here, right? So here’s the only song from it that I can listen to in front of my kid without feeling guilty about the language. Thankfully she’s too wee to pick up on drug references.
Grimes – Kill V. Maim
Allan and I started getting into Grimes recently after Olive was really rocking out to a song at a restaurant and some quick Googling revealed it to be Grimes’ “Oblivion”. Thanks for your awesome taste, Olive. I can’t stop/won’t stop listening to this song on repeat.
City and Colour – Wasted Love
I’ve always liked City and Colour well enough but never really went out of my way to listen to him except on the occasion he came on the radio while I was in the car. I guess this is the song that upgraded me to “fan” status. My only beef with this one is that it’s less than 3 minutes long, so I have to listen to it 3 or 4 times in a row to get enough of it.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra – Multi-Love
Literally never heard of this song or this band until a few days ago when Allan put this song on our new roadtrip mix CD. Where has it been hiding? This is stupid good.
Coleman Hell – 2 Heads
Maybe tied with “Wasted Love” for my favourite driving singalong song of the year.
Beck – Dreams
My favourite song of the summer, although I’ve kind of burned out on it at this point. When are you going to release something else, Beck?
Elle King – Ex’s & Oh’s
That voice! Also, how did someone so cool come from Rob Schneider? It’s a mystery for the ages.
Florence + The Machine – Ship to Wreck
My opinion of this song is heavily influenced by the fact that Olive sings along to it at the top of her lungs whenever it comes on. The best.
Everything Everything – Distant Past
Worst haircut, best song. I’ve been a little obsessed with Everything Everything since I first heard their album “Man Alive”(which is still probably one of my top 5 albums) but their past 2 releases have been phenomenal too. Hard to pick the best one off of this year’s “Get to Heaven” but this track is pretty solid.
Kendrick Lamar – i
See: every other “Best of 2015” list. Yes, this album is as good as they say.
Drake – Hotline Bling
So, Drake moves away from this girl and she dares to enjoy herself and have some fun with her life, and it makes him sad and he writes the whiniest song on record, but it’s also the catchiest song that has ever happened, so there’s that. Just try not to think about it too hard and enjoy the dancing.
Twenty One Pilots – Tear in my Heart
Obvious pick is obvious. Despite the severe radio overplay of Twenty One Pilots, this song is still pretty enjoyable.
