For the past few years, I’ve felt like I haven’t been taking enough photos. It certainly didn’t help when my laptop got hacked and I lost a large number of the photos I had taken. It often feels like these first few years of our little family are documented only in grainy, sloppy Instagram photos. It bums me out.
I do have some beautiful photos of course. Mainly of vacations, I suppose. Occasionally I’ll remember to bring my camera out for holidays, but more often than not, I don’t. The everyday moments slip away. I don’t photograph what seems mundane, but then months later, I realize a unique moment in time has slipped away, undocumented.
Which is why I’m doing a 365 Project this year. Taking a photo every day, to be compiled into a collection for the whole year. I’m the most amateur of amateur photographers, but it’s still been an interesting journey, and hopefully by the end of the year I will have improved my skills.
The photos are, well, mundane. Looking at just the past month, they look sort of boring. This is my life right now, and the photos don’t feel all that “special” just now. Only twice does anyone outside of the 4 of us show up in the images. Only six of the images are taken outside of our apartment. Still, I can see the value of capturing them. By the end of the year, my children will look totally different. My little baby will be a big toddler. We will likely move away from this apartment soon. My photos won’t be dark and wintery for too much longer. As time passes, these moments will become more special: a snapshot of a very specific time in our life that will be over as soon as every other moment.
It’s a little odd having to choose one photo a day. Obviously I’m just shooting way more photos to try to get a good one every day. Many days I end up with a photo that isn’t great: bad lighting, slightly out of focus, just nothing interesting happening. It’s weird to see those ones in my collection when there are dozens of gorgeous images from “prettier” days that couldn’t make the cut. So now I have two collections running simultaneously: my project where I have one photo per day, and my “favourites” collection where I keep all my best photos from the month, regardless of what day they were taken. I have no idea what to do with all these images. Open to suggestions!
Regardless, it’s nice to have too many photos instead of too few. Looking forward to the months to come!
